Having our tubes manufactured here supports Australian jobs and also significantly reduces our carbon footprint by not shipping empty tubes (containing air) around the world. According to a report published by the Guardian newspaper in the UK “just one of the world’s largest container ships can emit about as much pollution as 50 million cars.”
There is still the matter of our tubes’ afterlife…
We know all too well about the terrible impact’s plastic waste has on the environment and marine life. Our tubes are 100% kerb side recyclable in Australia. And because our products are undiluted, one tube of sunscreen will last you a very long time. When your tube is empty, remove the cap and place both tube and cap in your recycling bin.
This is why we didn’t take this decision lightly. In fact, we investigated packaging solutions for many months before choosing sugar cane HDPE tubes. In the context of climate change mitigation, our tubes are the most environmentally friendly option, and this is why:
- 100% Australian made: our tubes are made in Australia and not many sun care brands can say the same!
- Sugar Cane derived: further reducing the carbon content of our tubes
- Made using solar energy: minimising the use of fossil energy and reducing our carbon emissions in the process!
- Supporting a forest regeneration project: People4Ocean is excited to be a part of a world-first, sustainable forest project initiated by our tube manufacturer. The plantation is home to 20,000 trees in NSW to offset the carbon emissions of our packaging. This area is also home to endangered and vulnerable animal species and native vegetation that will be preserved or rehabilitated through this project
Finally, our newest edition to the range – our SPF 50+ Zinc Sticks - are encased in paper tubes, which makes them 100% biodegradable, compostable and zero-waste! The only down side is that these paper tubes are currently not manufactured in Australia and we have to source them from overseas.
